Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini vs. HTC One Mini (rumors)

We compare the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and HTC One Mini

DING DING, round one! Today we’re reffing an epic mini-battle between two upcoming devices: the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and the HTC One Mini. Both are smaller versions of devices that have some serious chops, so we’re curious to see what rumors are flying around about both devices, and ultimately, which one wins the Best of the Mini Flagships.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini vs. HTC One Mini: Power

The Galaxy S4 Mini is packing a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset that consists of a dual-core 1.7GHz  Krait CPU and an Adreno 305 GPU, as well as 1.5GB RAM. The device has 8GB of onboard storage but is equipped with a micro SD slot, which allows you to make that up to 64GB.
It’s widely believed that the One Mini will ship with a 1.4GHz dual-core processor alongside 2GB RAM and will be endowed with 16GB of internal storage, though it’s unlikely that it will have an expandable memory slot.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini vs. HTC One Mini: Display

Both devices have a 4.3-inch screen but there’s a gulf of difference between the quality that each offers. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini will have a 4.3-inch, qHD Super AMOLED screen, offering a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels and a 256PPI pixel density.
The One Mini, however, will reportedly pack 1280 x 720 pixels into the same amount of screen space, giving the device a pixel density of 342PPI. That puts its visuals up there with the larger, high-end devices on the market.
Winner – HTC One Mini

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini vs. HTC One Mini: Software

This is a category that is hard to judge, as both devices will run on Android, specifically the 4.2.2 build of Jelly Bean, and both will likely be updated to Key Lime Pie within the next few months. In terms of user interface, the devices do differ as both HTC and Samsung have their own custom UIs, HTC’s Sense 5.0 and Samsung’s TouchWiz. It’s very much a case of horses for courses, as some will prefer one over the other. For us, it’s Sense 5, all day, every day, but opinions vary so we’re going to call this round a draw.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini vs. HTC One Mini: Camera

For "mini" devices, both the Galaxy S4 Mini and the HTC One Mini will have impressive cameras. Both are set to have 8-megapixel sensors and offer features such as an LED flash and auto focus.
The Galaxy S4 Mini also offers geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection and panorama. It captures 1080P video at 30FPS and has a 1.9-megapixel secondary camera for video calling.
Rumor has it that the HTC One Mini will ship with the same Ultrapixel technology that the HTC One is endowed with, which includes stacked 4-megapixel sensors, although we’re not sure what sort of secondary camera the device will offer.
Winner -- Draw

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini vs. HTC One Mini: Form

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini is the perfect complement to the Galaxy range – in fact, it looks a lot like a smaller version of its full-sized counterpart, with curved edges and one hardware button on the device’s fascia.
The HTC One Mini is also reported to be a shrunken version of its bigger sibling, although rumor has it HTC has opted to change the materials it used for the HTC One. It is said to have gone from a cool, sturdy aluminium casing to a much cheaper-feeling plastic one, which may be a disappointment for anyone hoping to replicate the feel of the HTC One in smaller form.
Winner – Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini

And the winner is...

Draw
With each device swiping one category as a victory and everything else being too close to separate, the battle of the minis will see no clear victor! Both devices appear to be sound options, judging by the rumors, and it’s likely that each will have its fans and detractors. HTC and Samsung are both manufacturers with solid reputations and we think that both devices will be a great addition to each of their range.
